Do you need a passport to cruise from Bayonne, NJ?

On a Royal Caribbean or Celebrity round trip from Cape Liberty, a U.S. citizen can board with an original U.S. birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID, though both lines strongly recommend a passport. The 7 one-way sailings, including those ending in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, are not closed-loop cruises, so plan on a passport book valid at least 6 months after the cruise ends.

107 of the 114 sailings on our schedule are round trips that start and end at Cape Liberty, and on those a U.S. citizen does not need a passport to board. The other 7 are one-way: 1 to Miami, 1 to Fort Lauderdale, 1 to Montreal, 2 to Civitavecchia and 2 to Reykjavik. Those change the answer.

Everything below is for U.S. citizens unless it says otherwise. The cruise line checks documents at the terminal, so its pages decide whether you board, and each government decides who enters its country. This summarizes those official pages as we read them on 4 November 2026 and is not legal advice.

Do you need a passport to cruise from Bayonne, NJ?

Not on a round trip, if you are a U.S. citizen. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity accept an original U.S. birth certificate with a valid government-issued photo ID on round trips from U.S. ports that do not call in Panama, Colombia or Martinique. None of the round trips from Bayonne on our schedule calls there. The one-way sailings need a U.S. passport book.

Both lines strongly recommend a passport for every guest anyway, valid at least 6 months after the cruise ends. Celebrity says that if you have an issue in a foreign port, such as missing the ship, it is best to have a passport with you. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or CBP, says U.S. citizens need a passport to enter the United States by air from Canada, Bermuda, the Caribbean and the rest of the Western Hemisphere, so a birth certificate will not fly you home if you have to leave the ship abroad.

What is a closed-loop cruise?

A cruise that starts and ends at the same U.S. port on the same ship and travels only within the Western Hemisphere. That is the test in the State Department's passport rule, 22 CFR 53.2, and CBP describes it the same way, calling it a "closed loop" cruise.

On such a cruise, the rule lets a U.S. citizen present a government-issued photo ID with an original or a copy of a birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or a Certificate of Naturalization. A citizen under 16 may present one of those three documents alone.

The cruise lines are stricter than the federal rule on copies. Royal Caribbean says all documents must be original, with no photocopies, and Celebrity asks for an original state-certified birth certificate or a certified copy. CBP also warns that you may still need a passport to enter the countries your ship visits, and tells you to check with your cruise line.

Which cruises from Bayonne are closed loop?

What ID do Royal Caribbean and Celebrity accept on a round trip from Bayonne?

Any one of these, by both lines' travel document pages for sailings from U.S. ports:

  • A U.S. passport book or a U.S. passport card.
  • An original U.S. birth certificate with a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a state ID card, driver's license or military ID. Guests aged 15 and under need only the birth certificate.
  • An original U.S. naturalization certificate with a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • A permanent resident card with a valid passport from your country of citizenship.
  • An enhanced driver's license that has not expired.

The name must match across your documents and the reservation. Royal Caribbean's list of documents it does not accept includes copies or digital images, a driver's license on its own even if it is a REAL ID, a temporary license, a voter's registration card, baptismal papers, hospital certificates and Certificates of Live Birth. It also says Puerto Rico birth certificates issued before July 1, 2010 are not valid.

Enhanced driver's licenses come from only five states, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington, by DHS's page and both lines' pages. A New Jersey license is therefore only the photo ID that goes with your birth certificate. A New York enhanced license, which Royal Caribbean says has a flag on the front, works on its own.

Is a REAL ID enough for a cruise from Bayonne?

No. DHS says REAL ID cards cannot be used for international sea cruise travel, and Royal Caribbean will not accept a driver's license as your only proof, REAL ID included. A REAL ID license still works as the photo ID that goes with a birth certificate.

If you fly to Newark from elsewhere in the U.S., you do need a REAL ID license or another accepted ID, such as a passport. TSA says U.S. travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights, enforcement began on May 7, 2025, and on 4 November 2026 its page warned that travelers without an acceptable ID must pay a $45 fee. The Newark Airport guide covers the trip from the airport.

Can you use a passport card on a cruise from Bayonne?

Yes, on a round trip. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity accept a U.S. passport card on round trips from U.S. ports that skip Panama, Colombia and Martinique, and CBP says the card is acceptable for land and sea travel into the United States from within the Western Hemisphere.

Its limits matter if plans change. CBP says passport cards are not accepted for international air travel, the Government of Bermuda says U.S. passport cards are not permitted for travel to Bermuda by air, and the Bahamas Immigration Department says passport cards are not accepted. For the one-way sailings, both lines ask for a passport book.

Do you need a passport for a Bahamas cruise from Bayonne?

Not to board a round trip. The Bahamas sailings start and end at Cape Liberty, so Royal Caribbean's birth certificate rule applies, and Port Canaveral, where most of them call, is a U.S. port. The Bahamas Immigration Department's page is stricter. It says all persons entering The Bahamas must present a valid passport with at least six months of validity, and that passport cards are not accepted.

Royal Caribbean decides whether you board, and CBP warns that you may still need a passport for the countries your ship visits. We would carry a passport book valid at least six months past the cruise, which meets both the Bahamas page and Royal Caribbean's rules. The Caribbean and Bahamas guide lists the sailings.

Do you need a passport for a Bermuda cruise from Bayonne?

Not to board a round trip. The Bermuda sailings are closed-loop cruises, and the Government of Bermuda says cruise visitors are not required to complete any entry form, unlike visitors arriving by air or yacht, who fill in the Bermuda Arrival Card.

Two rules matter if something goes wrong on the island. Bermuda's visa page says U.S. passport cards are not permitted for travel to Bermuda by air, and CBP says U.S. citizens need a passport to enter the United States by air from Bermuda. The documents that get you on the ship would not fly you home. The Bermuda guide compares the sailings.

Do you need a passport for a Canada and New England cruise from Bayonne?

Not on the round trips. The Halifax trips and the fall voyages to Boston, Portland, Saint John, Sydney and Halifax come back to Cape Liberty, so they are closed loop. Canada's immigration department recommends that U.S. citizens always travel with a valid passport.

Without one, and when not travelling by air, Canada says you can show identity documents that give your full name, date of birth and citizenship, combining documents if one does not show everything. Flying home from Canada would take a passport book, since CBP says U.S. citizens need a passport to enter the United States by air from Canada. The Canada and New England guide compares the sailings.

Why do the one-way cruises to Miami and Fort Lauderdale need a passport?

Because they end at a different U.S. port, so they are not closed loop. The federal exception covers a citizen who boards in the United States and comes back on the same ship to the same U.S. port. These sailings start in Bayonne, call at foreign ports and end in Florida.

Independence of the Seas leaves for Miami on 28 October 2027 and calls at Bermuda, Aruba and Grand Cayman. Oasis of the Seas leaves for Fort Lauderdale on 31 October 2027 and calls at Aruba and Curaçao. For one-way sailings from the U.S., Royal Caribbean's documents page lists a U.S. passport book valid at least 6 months after the cruise ends, or for permanent residents a green card with a valid passport.

CBP's FAQ does not deal separately with a cruise between two U.S. ports. It defines only the closed loop, and these two sailings fall outside it.

What do you need for the Silversea cruise from Bayonne to Montreal?

Plan on a passport book. Silver Shadow's voyage of 24 September 2027 ends in Canada, so it is not closed loop. Silversea's U.S. ticket contract makes documents your responsibility. It says guests are solely responsible for carrying all passports, visas and other travel documents needed for embarkation, travel and disembarkation at all ports of call.

Canada recommends a valid passport for U.S. citizens. Getting home is the other half. CBP says U.S. citizens need a passport to enter the United States by air from Canada and that passport cards are not accepted for international air travel. By land or sea, CBP accepts a passport card or an enhanced driver's license.

What passport do you need for the transatlantic cruise to Civitavecchia?

A U.S. passport book valid at least 6 months after the cruise ends, by Royal Caribbean's rule for one-way sailings from the U.S. The European Union's own minimum is lower. It asks for a passport valid at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave the EU and issued within the last 10 years.

The crossings, the first on 25 April 2027, call at Ponta Delgada in the Azores and ports in Spain before ending in Italy. Portugal, Spain and Italy are in the Schengen area, where the EU's common visa rules cover short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Two EU systems apply to non-EU visitors:

  • ETIAS. On 4 November 2026 the official ETIAS site said ETIAS is not in operation, no applications are being collected, and the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. The United States is on its list of visa-exempt countries whose nationals will need one. The site gives the fee as EUR 20, with some travelers exempt.
  • EES. The Entry/Exit System registers non-EU nationals on short stays each time they cross the external borders of the countries using it, and the EU says it will gradually replace passport stamps.

See the Europe sailings.

What do you need for the Greenland and Iceland cruises ending in Reykjavik?

A U.S. passport book valid at least 6 months after the cruise ends, by Celebrity's rule for one-way sailings from the U.S. These Celebrity voyages, the first on 20 June 2027, call in Canada, at Qaqortoq in Greenland and at Isafjordur in Iceland before ending in Reykjavik.

Greenland and Iceland follow different rules. Visit Greenland says Greenland is not a member of the EU and not a party to the Schengen Agreement, and lists the United States among the countries whose citizens do not need a visa to enter. Iceland is in the Schengen area and on the ETIAS list, and the ETIAS site's checklist asks for a passport valid three months after you leave the European countries that require ETIAS.

What documents do children need on a cruise from Bayonne?

On a round trip, a U.S. citizen aged 15 or under needs only a birth certificate and no photo ID, by both lines' pages, which matches the federal rule for citizens under 16. A child sailing without a parent or legal guardian also needs a notarized consent form.

  • The consent form. Royal Caribbean says guests 17 and under travelling without a legal guardian must have their accompanying adult present a notarized guardian consent form at check-in, and that boarding may be denied without it. Celebrity asks for a notarized form signed by the child's guardian.
  • Canada. Canada treats anyone under 18 as a minor. A child travelling with one parent should carry a letter signed by the other parent with that parent's address and phone number and a photocopy of their signed passport or national ID card. With other adults, the letter comes from the parents or guardians, and Canada says it does not need to be certified.
  • Europe and one-way sailings. The EU says children must have their own passport. Both lines list only a passport book for one-way sailings from the U.S.
  • Babies. Minimum ages are in the first-time cruiser FAQ.

What do green card holders and other non-U.S. citizens need?

CBP says U.S. lawful permanent residents must present a valid permanent resident card, Form I-551, or other valid evidence of permanent residence to enter the United States, and that a passport is not required. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are stricter for boarding. Both ask for the physical card and a valid passport from your country of citizenship, valid at least 6 months after the cruise ends.

  • Cards without a photo. Both lines say guests aged 16 and older whose card has no photo must also show a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • Canada. A U.S. permanent resident entering by water needs only the green card or equivalent proof of status, and by air also a passport, Canada says. Citizens of eTA-required countries arriving by boat, including a cruise ship, do not need an eTA but still need a valid passport, and visa-required travelers need a visitor visa for any method of travel, cruise ships included.
  • Bermuda. Travelers from countries listed in Bermuda's visa order must present a multi re-entry visa for the UK, the U.S. or Canada, and the visa and passport must be valid for 45 days after the visit.
  • The Bahamas. Its immigration department says some nationalities may require a visa.
  • Other passports. Royal Caribbean says the United States may require an ESTA or a visa depending on nationality. In Europe, the EU says whether you need a visa depends on your nationality.

We cannot advise on individual cases. Ask the cruise line and the consulate of each country on your route.

What should you do before you leave home?

Check your sailing on Royal Caribbean's or Celebrity's travel documents page a few weeks before you go. Both say government requirements may change and that booked guests get the latest full details before sailing.

Keep your documents on you at the terminal, not in a checked bag, since Royal Caribbean says you will present them at check-in. If a name change means your documents do not match, Royal Caribbean says you will need an extra step. For the rest of embarkation day, see the first-time cruiser FAQ and the Cape Liberty Cruise Port guide.
