Newark airport to Cape Liberty: taxis, ride apps and distances from EWR, JFK and LaGuardia

Newark Liberty International (EWR) is the closest airport to Cape Liberty Cruise Port, about 10 miles by road, and the one Royal Caribbean names as closest. LaGuardia is about 20 miles away and JFK about 29, both on the far side of Manhattan. From all three a taxi or ride app can take you straight to the terminal, and Royal Caribbean says many guests fly in the day before.

Three big airports serve Cape Liberty Cruise Port, and Newark is much the nearest. JFK and LaGuardia are in Queens, so the drive from either crosses Manhattan or Staten Island before it reaches Bayonne. No train runs to the terminal, and the Port Authority does not let guests walk in, so whichever airport you use, the last part of the trip is by road.

AirportRoad distance to the terminalRoute the OpenStreetMap router picks
Newark Liberty (EWR)about 10 milesI-78 and the Turnpike's Newark Bay Extension to Exit 14A
LaGuardia (LGA)about 20 milesAcross Manhattan and through the Holland Tunnel

We measured these with OpenStreetMap's routing from each airport to the terminal on 4 November 2026. We do not quote drive times, because the router assumes empty roads and these routes rarely are.

How far is Newark airport from Cape Liberty Cruise Port?

Newark Liberty International Airport is about 10 miles from Cape Liberty Cruise Port by road, by OpenStreetMap routing, and Royal Caribbean's directions page puts it at 9 miles. Royal Caribbean's Cape Liberty guide names Newark as the closest airport, and Celebrity's New Jersey page says the port is close to Newark too.

Royal Caribbean's route from the airport:

  1. Leave the airport following the signs for the New Jersey Turnpike.
  2. Take the Turnpike to Exit 14A and pay the toll at the exit.
  3. Follow Route 440 South to Port Terminal Boulevard and turn left at the traffic light.
  4. Go through the guard gate and follow the signs to the cruise terminal.

A taxi or ride app driver will take the same road. The port guide explains what happens at the terminal.

How much is a taxi from Newark airport to Cape Liberty?

Newark airport's taxi page has no fare for Bayonne. The nearest place it lists, Jersey City, the city just north of Bayonne, was estimated at $56 when we read the page on 4 November 2026, before tips, tolls and extra fees. The page calls these estimates, not flat rates.

The extras the airport lists for a taxi into New Jersey:

  • Airport access fee. $2.00 on every trip.
  • Bags. $1 for each bag, carry-ons included.
  • New Jersey surcharge. An extra $5 for trips within New Jersey or to other states.
  • Other fees. The page says additional fees can range from $6.75 to $15.75.
  • Tolls and tip. Not included. Royal Caribbean's route pays a Turnpike toll at Exit 14A.

Take a taxi only from an official taxi stand, which the airport's page maps for each terminal. The airport says to take a receipt from the Taxi Dispatcher, show it to the driver and keep it. The Port Authority's Welcome Center in each terminal's arrivals area can help, and seniors get a 10% discount.

Where do you get an Uber or Lyft at Newark airport?

Each Newark terminal has its own ride app pickup area, and the airport tells you to collect your bags first and then follow the "Ride App Pick Up" signs. On 4 November 2026 the airport listed these locations:

TerminalRide app pickup
Terminal AArrivals level, directly across the street from the terminal
Terminal BArrivals level, on the terminal frontage
Terminal CFloor 3 of the Terminal C Garage

The airport does not publish ride app prices, which change with time of day. Check the plate on the car against the app before you get in. Ride apps can take you all the way to the terminal at Cape Liberty, since Celebrity says Uber and Lyft drivers have access to the port's restricted area.

How do you get from JFK to Cape Liberty?

By taxi or ride app. JFK is about 29 miles from Cape Liberty by the shortest road route, which crosses Manhattan and goes through the Holland Tunnel. JFK's $70 flat taxi fare covers Manhattan only; for New Jersey, the airport says the price is negotiated between passenger and driver at the start of the trip.

New York City's Taxi and Limousine Commission sets the same rule for any yellow taxi trip outside the city other than to Westchester, Nassau or Newark Airport. The driver can choose whether to take the trip, and you agree the fare before you set off. Settle the price, and that it includes tolls, before you load the bags.

Ride apps at JFK:

  • Most terminals. Passengers can generally be picked up in front of their terminal, though it varies by time of day.
  • Terminals 5 and 7. On 4 November 2026 JFK said ride app pickups for these terminals had moved for construction to the Howard Beach AirTrain Station.
  • Price. Set in the app, by time of day and location.

Royal Caribbean also gives a route that avoids Manhattan, over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island, then north on Route 440 over the Bayonne Bridge. The New York City guide covers it, with the tolls.

How do you get from LaGuardia to Cape Liberty?

By taxi or ride app. LaGuardia is about 20 miles from Cape Liberty by road, on a route that crosses Manhattan and takes the Holland Tunnel. LaGuardia's taxi page gives metered estimates within New York City and $110 to Newark Airport, but no figure for other New Jersey destinations.

That leaves the city's rule for yellow taxi trips outside New York, under which you agree the fare with the driver before you leave. LaGuardia's taxi page also lists a $2.00 Port Authority access fee on pickups, a $1.00 surcharge on weekdays from 4 pm to 8 pm and a $0.50 surcharge from 8 pm to 6 am.

Ride app pickups at LaGuardia, as the airport listed them on 4 November 2026:

TerminalRide app pickup
Terminal ADirectly across the street from the terminal
Terminal BLevel 2 of the Terminal B parking garage
Terminal CArrivals inner lane

Follow the "Ride App Pick Up" signs and check the app for any change on the day.

Do Royal Caribbean and Celebrity offer transfers from the airport to Cape Liberty?

Both lines sell transfers between the airport and the pier, but neither publishes a Cape Liberty price on the pages we read on 4 November 2026. You ask for a quote when you book.

  • Royal Caribbean. Transfers run between the airport and the pier on embarkation day and on debarkation day only. The line recommends buying them two weeks before sailing and needs your flight details. You book through a travel advisor or Royal Caribbean's Reservations team, and cruise-only guests can buy the service separately, which Royal Caribbean calls Royal connections.
  • Celebrity. Most ports offer transfers to and from the pier on sailing day and return day. Your flights have to meet Celebrity's flight rules on the same day the cruise leaves and returns. Celebrity's disembarkation article says a return transfer can be added on board up to five days before the cruise ends.

Neither line's page says which of the three airports its Cape Liberty transfers serve. Ask when you book.

Can you get from Newark airport to Cape Liberty by train?

Not all the way. No rail line reaches the terminal, and Celebrity says the Port Authority does not allow guests to arrive at the port on foot. The nearest rail is the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail in Bayonne, whose 34th Street station is about 2.7 miles from the terminal by road, so a trip by rail still ends in a taxi.

With cruise luggage, a taxi or ride app from the airport is the simpler choice. If you are spending a night in Jersey City or Manhattan first, the New York City guide explains the PATH and light rail route and its fares.

What time should your flight land before a Cape Liberty cruise?

The safest plan is the day before. Royal Caribbean says many guests find it easiest to arrive a day before sailing and stay in a hotel the night before, because a delayed flight can mean missing the ship. Our hotels guide compares places to stay.

If you fly in on sailing day, work back from the deadline:

  • Departure times. The itineraries on our schedule show Royal Caribbean's round trips leaving Bayonne at 3 pm, Celebrity Summit at 4 pm and Celebrity Silhouette's Bermuda trips at 3 pm. Your documents give the time for your sailing.
  • Royal Caribbean's cutoff. Checked in at least 90 minutes before the scheduled sailing time, or you do not sail. With a 3 pm departure that is 1:30 pm.
  • Celebrity's cutoff. At the pier and checked in at least 60 minutes before the published sailing time, for U.S. departures.
  • Your arrival window. Both lines ask you to arrive in the slot you chose at online check-in.

Then add time for the bags, the taxi line and the drive, more if you land at JFK or LaGuardia. If you do miss the ship, Royal Caribbean says to contact its Emergency Travel Team. Unless your travel protection covers the delay, you pay the cost of catching up with the ship at its next port.

What time should you book your flight home after a Cape Liberty cruise?

Leave plenty of room. The ships on our schedule are due back at Cape Liberty at 6 am or 7 am, and Celebrity says disembarkation usually runs from about 8 am to 10 am. Neither Royal Caribbean nor Celebrity gives a fixed earliest flight time for Newark on the pages we read.

What decides how early you can leave the ship:

  • Royal Caribbean. Your time to leave follows the color of your luggage tag. Guests who carry all their own bags can choose Self-Assist departure to get off early.
  • Celebrity. Guests who keep their own luggage can choose self disembarkation, which usually lets them leave as soon as it begins. Celebrity's disembarkation article says you are told the earliest reasonable flight time when you book, and it advises leaving plenty of time between disembarkation and your flight because immigration can cause delays.

Newark is the shortest ride from the port, so it is the easiest airport for a same-day flight home. From JFK or LaGuardia, allow for a longer drive through Manhattan or Staten Island. The port guide describes disembarkation morning, and our schedule has every sailing's dates.
